ERIE, Pa. - The Maryland wrestling teamed opened its 2006-07 season going 2-1 at the Avalon Duals on November 4 in Erie, Pa. The Terps defeated Stanford, 27-12, and Mercyhurst, 22-12, but lost to No. 13 Edinboro, 28-12. Junior Charlie Pinto, redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor, and freshman Mike Letts each won three matches on the day.
Taylor led the way for the Terrapins, ending all three of his matches by way of fall. He took down Stanford's Jared Boyer in just 1:06, which was the quickest pin of the entire meet. He also took down Mercyhurst's Rich Froats in 5:16 and Edinboro's Jim Gibson in 4:09.
Pinto won two of his matches by decision and one by major decision. His major decision win came against Stanford's Rafael Chavez, 14-4. Letts won each of his matches by decision, winning by two, three, and four points in his respective bouts.
Senior Jason Kiessling won a pair of matches on the day, including a 12-3 major decision against Hudson Harrison of Mercyhurst. Classmate Jerry Afari went 2-1 on the day in his heavyweight debut, earning his two wins via decision.
In Maryland's 27-12 win against Stanford, Tanner Gardner got things going for the Cardinal with a pin in 5:19, but freshman Jon Kohler responded with a decision, Pinto added a major decision, and junior Andrew Schlaffer dominated Steven Frehn for a 19-2 technical decision. Josh Zupancic picked up a decision to stop the Maryland streak, but Kiessling and Letts added more points for the Terps with a pair of decisions. Stanford won one more match at 184 before Taylor and Afari sealed the win for Maryland.
Against Mercyhurst, the two teams traded decisions at the first four weight classes before Andy Lamancusa broke the deadlock to put the Lakers up 9-6. Kiessling posted a major decision put the Terps up 10-9 and then Letts followed up with a win of his own. Taylor secured the victory when he pinned Froats at 197 pounds.
Edinboro started strong against the Terrapins, winning five of the first six matches, including a major decision at 157 pounds. Despite Letts and Taylor winning their respective matches, the Fighting Scots held on to beat Maryland.
Maryland is back in action next Saturday, November 11 when it takes on Bucknell, James Madison, and Drexel in Philadelphia.
