COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The long awaited start of the season has arrived as the National Champion Maryland women's basketball team opens the 2006-07 campaign at Middle Tennessee State on Friday, Nov. 10. Fans can listen to the season opener with Matt Noble and Dave Preston calling the game on the Terrapins Sports Radio Network and at www.umterps.com.
After earning numerous preseason No. 1 rankings, including top-billings in the Associated Press and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches polls, the Terps put that rating to the test for the first time in front of what is expected to be a sell-out crowd in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Making a homecoming will be junior Ashleigh Newman (Shelbyville, Tenn./Shelbyville Area) who had played numerous state tournament games at the Murphy Center, the same arena the Terps will be playing in on Friday night. She will also be playing against her former high school coach, Rick Insell, who is currently in his second season at Middle Tennessee State. It is the first-ever meeting between the teams.
Maryland has found a lot of success in its season openers, winning the opening game of the season 29 times, while losing in just six tries. The Terrapins have also won the first game of the year in each of the four seasons they have been directed by head coach Brenda Frese.
After its game against MSTU, Maryland returns for its home debut against George Mason on Sunday, Nov. 12. The Terrapins will unveil the national championship banner prior to the start of the game and will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m. Tickets to the home opener are still available and can be purchased at www.umterps.com or by calling the Comcast Center Ticket Office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP.
