COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The top-ranked Terrapin women's basketball team returns home for two games, beginning with a matchup against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. Owning the nation's longest win streak and posting an 8-0 record to date, Maryland is looking to match its best start in 15 years.
The Terps have been on the road for its last three contests, capturing the Junkanoo Jam title in the Bahamas over the holiday break and most recently defeating Marshall, 68-49.
Maryland's 8-0 start to the season has been, due in large part to the team's balanced offense, a characteristic of last season's championship squad when five players averaged double-digit scoring. This season, at least four players have reached double figures in every game, with senior Shay Doron (15.3 ppg) and junior Crystal Langhorne (15.0 ppg) leading the team in scoring. Langhorne, who leads the Terps with 9.3 rebounds per game, has had double-doubles in five of the team's eight games.
Saturday's meeting against the Gauchos will be the second ever between the teams and the first since 1995. UCSB has struggled to start the season, coming to Comcast Center with a 1-4 record. It won its season opener against Portland State, 88-73, major conference opponents UCLA, Oregon, Louisville and NC State.
Last year, the Gauchos tied for first in the Big West Conference and advanced to the first round of the WNIT. They return nine letterwinners from last year's 16-14 squad, including three starters.
