Edu, Seitz Named NSCAA All-Americans

Dec. 2, 2006

MISSION, Kan. - Junior midfielder Maurice Edu became the 14th Maryland men's soccer student-athlete to be named a 2006 NSCAA/adidas First Team All-American as the teams were announced yesterday by the NSCAA. Sophomore keeper Chris Seitz was a third team honoree. The Terps are the only ACC school to place two student-athletes on the All-America list.

Edu is the Terps' 14th student-athlete in program history to earn first team accolades and the fifth under head coach Sasho Cirovski. He is also the third Maryland midfielder since 2002 to earn first team honors as Scott Buete garnered the award in 2003 and Sumed Ibrahim was a two-time selection in 2002 and 2003.

Maryland is the only ACC school to place two student-athletes on the All-America lists and only five other teams in the country did it. Lehigh, Notre Dame, Santa Barbara, SMU, and West Virginia also garnered a pair of selections.

Edu was a steady presence for the Terps as the defensive midfielder and came up with important goals when Maryland needed them most. Edu recorded four game-winning goals during the season with three of them coming in 1-0 wins. He notched five goals and four assists for 14 points this season and was an All-ACC first team honoree as well as a Hermann Trophy semifinalist.

Seitz was tabbed the ACC Defensive Player of the Year for anchoring the Maryland backline which racked up 10 shutouts in 16 wins. He put together a fantastic sophomore campaign with a goals against average of 0.66 and a save percentage of .816. His record of 15-4-1 this past season improved his career mark to 28-5-3 in his first two seasons in College Park. In the Terps' 2-1 win against Virginia Tech on October 27, Seitz was crucial as he stopped a career-high eight shots. He then matched that mark in Maryland's 1-0 win against Boston College in the ACC Tournament on November 1.

The honorees will be invited to the NSCAA All-America Luncheon, which will be held on January 13, 2007 as part of the 2007 NSCAA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind.
