Five Terps Named Preseason All-Americans By Face-Off Yearbook

BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior defenders Ray Megill and Steve Whittenberg were named to the Face-Off Yearbook preseason All-America first team and three other Terps were also named as Inside Lacrosse announced the teams today.

Three other Terps, senior goalie Harry Alford, junior defender Joe Cinosky and junior attackman Max Ritz, were named preseason honorable mention All-Americans.

Megill, a native of Clark, N.J., was a third team All-American as a junior in 2006. He finished second on the team with 29 caused turnovers. The All-ACC honoree was also sixth on the squad with 38 groundballs.

A 2006 second team All-American, Whittenberg led the Terps with 40 caused turnovers as a junior. The Springfield, Va., native was also third on the squad with 46 groundballs. The 2006 All-ACC selection posted four games with five or more caused turnovers in 2006.

Both Megill and Whittenberg were named to Inside Lacrosse's preseason All-ACC squad as well.

Alford is a two-time honorable mention All-American and turned in an impressive 2006 season that saw him ranked among NCAA leaders in goals against average and save percentage. The native of Washington, D.C., was fifth with a .616 save percentage and was also sixth with a 6.54 GAA.

Cinosky, a native of Boonton, N.J., finished the 2006 season among Maryland's team leaders in groundballs and caused turnovers. He finished his sophomore season with 29 groundballs and 21 caused turnovers.

Ritz is Maryland's top returning scorer after compiling 31 points on 20 goals and 11 assists. As a sophomore he scored a career-high six points on five goals and an assist in Maryland's 16-8 victory over Denver in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

In other rankings released by Inside Lacrosse, Maryland was selected seventh in the preseason Face-Off Yearbook Top 25 and was picked to finish third in the ACC.
