The top-ranked Maryland women's basketball team is headed back on the road. Head coach Brenda Frese returns to her home state as her Terrapins take on Northern Iowa on Tuesday, Dec. 6. The Terps are off to their best start since 1982-83.
Frese, a native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which is about 65 miles from Northern Iowa, which is situated in Cedar Falls. She was a four-year letterwinner at Washington High in Cedar Rapids, helping the team to win the 1988 state title.
The Terps improved on the nation's longest win streak on Monday night, defeating Siena, 93-54. ACC Player of the Week Marissa Coleman (Cheltenham, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) led the way with 19 points and a career-high 12 assists, one game after posting the program's first-ever triple double. Maryland has won its last 16 games, dating back to March 19, 2006, the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Five players reached double figures against the Saints, the ninth time this season Maryland has had at least four double-digit scorers in a game. The Terrapins boast a balanced offense with averages 86.8 points per game, as four are averaging double digits, lead by Crystal Langhorne's 15.1 ppg.
The Panthers host the Terps in their new arena, the McLeod Center. The facility has a capacity crowd of 7,018. Northern Iowa lost its inaugural game in the arena, forcing overtime against Iowa State, 80-74. Most recently, UNI topped Illinois-Chicago, 66-50, to improve to 3-4 on the season.
The Panthers are led by senior Tara King's 20.3 ppg, while classmate Jessie Biggs is contributing 14.2 ppg and a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game. UNI is under the direction of Tony DiCecco, who is in his 12th season in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
