Maryland Renews Rivalry at Temple
The No. 1 Terps put their win streak on the line when they renew their rivalry with Temple, traveling to Philadelphia on Sunday, Dec. 8. The two teams met at least once every season for a decade but had not battled on the hardwood since 1991. Maryland will be wrapping up a three-game week this weekend.
Maryland continues to roll through the season, winning its first 11 games of the year and 16-straight, the nation's longest winning streak, dating back to last season.
Maryland's 16-game win streak is the longest in the nation and dates back to March 19, 2006, the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Two conference players of the week go head-to-head in this contest. Maryland's Marissa Coleman was voted this week's ACC honoree, while Temple's Kamesha Hairston was the Atlantic 10's standout player.
For the first time this season, five Terps are averaging double figures. During last season's championship run, five Terrapins also averaged double-digit scoring.
The game can be heard on the University of Maryland's WMUC Radio and on the internet with a link provided through www.umterps.com.
Terps as No. 1
After receiving the No. 1 ranking in both the Association Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll, the Terrapins have spent eight weeks in both polls as the No. 1 team in the nation in the history of the program.
Maryland's all-time record when ranked No. 1 in both polls is 17-2 over the eight-week period. The Terps were the AP's No. 1 team from Jan. 19-Feb. 15, 1992, and the coaches' top team from Jan. 21-Feb. 17, 1992, and have been ranked No. 1 for four weeks this season in both polls.
About Temple
The Owls are 4-3 coming into this weekend's contest, but have posted a 1-2 record against ACC teams. Temple defeated Georgia Tech, 76-62, but could not pull out wins against Virginia (71-65) and NC State (59-57) in back-to-back games. TU bounced back to defeat Stony Brook, 72-58, to end the losing streak.
Kamesha Hairston is the reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, averaging a double-doubles (26.5 ppg, 14.0 rpg) in the losses to Virginia and NC State. She is just shy of averaging a double-double, leading the team with 21.4 ppg and 9.9 rpg.
Fifth year head coach Dawn Staley is very familiar with the ACC, having lettered for Virginia from 1989-92. She was involved in numerous classics between the Terps and the Cavs.
SERIES VS. TEMPLE: Maryland leads the all-time series, 10-1. The Terps have played six times in Philadelphia dating back to 1982 and won all six games on the Owls' home court. Maryland and Temple played at least once every season from 1982-1991, but had not played one another since.
Coleman Selected ACC Player of the Week
After registering the program's first-ever triple double and the 11th in ACC history, sophomore Marissa Coleman was voted the conference's Player of the Week on Dec. 4. She is the first Terp to earn the honor this season.
Coleman had 15 points, 14 rebounds and a-then career high 10 assists to post the triple-double against UC Santa Barbara. She nearly outrebounded the Gauchos on her own, as they had only 17 team boards. Earlier in the week, she nearly had a double-double, netting 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win at Marshall.
Coleman Makes History
Sophomore Marissa Coleman was the first player in school history to record a triple-double, doing so in the win over UCSB on Dec. 2. She netted 15 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had a career-high 10 assists to mark the achievement.
Coleman became the 11th player in ACC history to record a triple double.
Nation's Longest Win Streak
With the Florida men's basketball team losing to Kansas on Nov. 25, the Maryland women's basketball team currently has the nation's longest active win streak going at 17 games.
The Gators, who claimed the men's national championship, had won 17 in a row, dating back to March 1, 2006. The Terp women's streak dates back to March 19, 2006, the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Terps' record for the longest win streak is 21, which spanned Jan. 10, 1989, through March 31, 1989.
Balancing Act
For the second-consecutive year, Maryland boasts a balance attack and a high-powered offense with numerous options. For the first time this season, five Terps are averaging double-digit scoring.
The Terps have had at least four players score in double figures in all but two game and twice had six players reach double digits. The offense is, once again, one of the best in the nation, ranking fourth heading into the week and is second in the ACC.
During last year's championship run, five players averaged double figures, the only team from a major conference. The Terps' offense was second in the nation with an average of 83.3 ppg, the highest in the program since 1988-89.
Coming Up
After wrapping up a three-game week at Temple, the Terps take a 10-day break from games. Maryland is back on the court to close out a three-game road swing at Loyola on Dec. 21.
