Feb. 13, 2006
Sophomore Brett Tidball has been named the 2006 season's first Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
The Bethesda, Md. native pitched six scoreless innings and retired the last 10 batters he faced in leading Maryland to a 1-0 victory over East Carolina in the first game of a doubleheader on Feb. 12. Making his first career start on the hill, the southpaw dominated Pirate hitters on a frigid afternoon in Greenville, N.C., establishing new career highs in innings and strikeouts (four). He held the Pirates to a .143 batting average and did not issue a walk. Tidball was perfect over his final 3.1 innings en route to the first win of his career. With some help from the bullpen, Maryland recorded its first shutout since April 7, 2004 (vs. UMBC, 2-0).
Tidball becomes the first Terp to win ACC Pitcher of the Week honors since senior Ben Pfinsgraff did it on April 4, 2005.
