COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
For the fifth time this season, Maryland's Marissa Coleman was named ACC Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week, tying teammate Crystal Langhorne's record set last season. Coleman helped the fourth-ranked Terps to a 2-1 week, setting career highs in two statistical categories.
Coleman (Cheltenham, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) nearly averaged a double-double in three games last week, scoring 12.7 points per game to go with 9.3 rebounds per contest. Against No. 1 Duke last Monday, she scored a career-high 20 points as Maryland fell just short of pulling a second-straight upset of a No. 1 team. The guard/forward was 8-for-11 from the field (82.7 percent) in the game, hitting on two of her three 3-point attempts. She also dished out three assists and pulled down three boards.
In an 86-59 route of No. 18/20 Boston College on Thursday, Coleman set another career best, hauling down 15 boards, as Maryland outrebounded the Eagles, 48-30, on the evening. She contributed eight points and also handed out four assists to go with two blocks.
Coleman closed out the three-game week posting her sixth double-double of the season in the 65-57 win at NC State on Sunday, netting 10 points and grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds. She hit a pair of three pointers in the second half to help the Terps pull away from the Wolfpack and also dished off another two assists.
For the week, Coleman was 14-for-24 from the floor (58.3 percent), 4-for-8 from beyond the arc (50.0 percent) and 6-for-7 from the charity stripe (85.7 percent), while averaging 3.0 assists per game.
Coleman tied current sophomore Crystal Langhorne's (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) record of five Rookie of the Week honors. Coleman's five weekly nods are the most for any current ACC freshman. She is the highest-scoring freshman (14.7 ppg) and highest rebounding freshman (7.5 rpg) in the league, ranking in the top 10 in the ACC overall in both categories. She also leads the conference with a 50.6 three-point shooting percentage.
Maryland, who is ranked fourth for the second-straight week in the newest Associated Press poll which was released Monday, is 24-3 overall and 11-2 in the ACC. The Terps are back in action on Thursday night, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. when they host Clemson in the ACC regular-season finale.
