COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former Maryland women's basketball coach Chris Weller will be honored at halftime of the Terps game on Sunday, Feb. 5 vs. Virginia. The all-time winningest coach in the history of the program, Weller will be recognized prior to the start of the game which tips off at noon. Former Terrapin football standout and current member of the NFL's Oakland Raiders LaMont Jordan will also be recognized on Sunday and will serve as Honorary Coach for his contributions to the women's basketball program.
Weller was at the Maryland helm for 27 years before retiring in 2002, one of a handful of college coaches, men's or women's, to coach 25 seasons at the same institution. The third winningest coach in ACC history, she amassed a 499-286 record during her tenure and led the Terps to a No. 1 national ranking during the 1992 season. Under her direction, Maryland won a conference-record eight ACC Tournament titles, including winning the first ever tournament crown in 1978.
During her tenure, Maryland reached three Final Fours, advanced to eight Elite Eights and nine Sweet Sixteens. In 1992, she was named Naismith National Coach of the year and BWAA Coach of the Year. Weller coached four All-Americans, one ACC Player of the Year, three ACC Rookies of the Year and 19 All-ACC honorees, including nine first team honorees.
Weller is a 1966 graduate of Maryland, earning four varsity letters in basketball, swimming and lacrosse. She completed her Master's in College Park in 1973 and served as an assistant coach under Dottie McKnight for two seasons before being named head coach in 1975.
An All-American running back for the Terps from 1997-2000, Jordan has been a supporter of the women's basketball program for many years and can often be seen on the sidelines at games when he is not in season with the Raiders. For his contributions to the program, he will be named Honorary Coach and, at halftime, there will be a ceremonial check presentation to Director of Athletics Deborah A. Yow and Senior Associate Athletic Director Larry Leckonby, who oversees the day-to-day operations of the women's basketball team.
Maryland is ranked sixth in the nation and has been ranked among the top 10 for 11-straight weeks. The Terps head into Sunday's contest with a 20-2 record and 7-1 in the ACC. Tickets can still be purchased for the game either online at www.umterps.com or by calling the Comcast Center Ticket Office at 1-800-IMA-TERP.
