Langhorne Among Midseason Wooden Award Candidates
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Another ACC clash is on tap for the sixth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 12 p.m. as the Terrapins will be looking for their first sweep of the Cavaliers since 1989 in the first-ever "Comcast Bowl."
A number of festivities are scheduled for Sunday, including a pre-game recognition honoring legendary coach Chris Weller, who mentored the Terrapins from 1975-2002. Former football standout and current Oakland Raider LaMont Jordan will serve as an Honorary Coach and partake in a ceremonial check presentation for his contributions to the women's basketball team at halftime.
The first 1,000 fans receive "Fear the Turtle" wristbands and a lucky fan will be able to compete in a $5,000 Football Toss at halftime. The best Super Bowl commercials and football-themed contests will be played throughout the game.
In the rematch of the UVA-UM contest at Virginia in January, the Cavaliers are making their 28th trip to College Park in the history of the series, winning 14 times on Maryland's home court. The Terps defeated the Cavs, 84-74, in overtime, the first time since 1992 they had won in Charlottesville, Va. Virginia (13-7, 2-6) leads the all-time series, 40-24.
Maryland picked up its 20th-win of the season with its 88-77 victory over Miami on Wednesday. It is the 12th 20-win season in the program's history and the second straight. The Terps are riding a six-game win streak and are led by sophomore Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) who was recently named one of 20 midseason candidates for the John R. Wooden Award and is averaging 16.5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
Tickets are still available for Sunday's contest. Tickets can be purchased online at www.umterps.com or at the Comcast Center Ticket Office at 1-800-IMA-TERP.
