Feb. 5, 2006

Recap |  Box Score |  Notes

Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
On today's game:
"Today was another very nice win. I thought it was a game of long scoring runs. I really liked the way we executed in the first half. I thought we played really well offensively and had some great looks in the first half. We knew Virginia wasn't going to quit. I thought defensively we had some problems, but the good thing is they are all correctable and we were able to come out with a nice, convincing win."

On team's first half play:
"We got a lot of contributions from the bench and I thought we really played one of our highest levels of basketball in the first half. For a while we had some really great energy on both the defensive and offensive ends."

On Laura Harper's play:
"Laura is really coming into her own. She's being active and aggressive and it's helping to take the heat off Crystal [Langhorne]. They had to go out of the double team on Crystal and it just makes us that much better of a team."

Junior Guard Shay Doron
On team's energy:
"It's a lot of fun to play when your team has so much energy. When you play like that, you never feel tired. You get to a different level where you don't even notice that you're going at full speed. It's great that we were able to get that energy not just from one person, but from the entire team."

On her play tonight:
"Tonight was just my night. Every night is a different person that steps up, and that's what is so special about this team."

Sophomore Forward Laura Harper
On team's 21-1 run in the first half:
"I knew we were flowing, but I didn't realize that was the run we had. But it's really exciting and that's the kind of basketball you want to play. Who wouldn't want to play in an atmosphere like that?"

Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan
On competitiveness of the ACC:
"This is probably the best conference the ACC has ever had. We have No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 in the conference ... I don't remember there ever being three conference teams as high up in the rankings, and for a young team like ours coming through, it's been brutal."

On Maryland:
"Maryland had a good game plan today. They have a lot of weapons and are difficult to defend. They have a lot of penetrators, lots of three-point shooters and a good inside-out game. We made a run to come back in the second half and to their credit they bent, but didn't break. It's what they've been doing all year."

On Virginia's second half play:
"We played with great poise and tenacity. We are young and that's going to serve us well in the future. The team played their hearts out to come back in the second half and I have to give them a lot of credit."

On guard Sharnee Zoll:
"Sharnee led our team to be more aggressive. She had 12 assists, one turnover and played close to 40 minutes. You can see what she means to our team. I can't afford to take her out, she's too valuable."

Guard Sharnee Zoll
On team's mind frame:
"We tell each other every time in the huddle that no matter how much time is left, even if it's only 38 seconds, we are going to go out there and play. That's just part of Virginia basketball. We never give up."

On playing Maryland:
"We look forward to every game, we lost to them down in Virginia and we wanted to get back here and get a win. The good thing about basketball is that you always have another day."
