COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's basketball team collected nearly $4000 in an effort to support the Hoops for Hope basketball game which takes place on Sunday, February 19 when the Terps visit NC State. Maryland head coach Brenda Frese will be presenting Wolfpack head coach Kay Yow with a check for $3806.16. Hoops for Hope benefits the triangle area Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
"It was important for us to get involved with such a worthy cause," said Frese. "This disease affects our mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters and friends. We need to continue to bring awareness and spread hope that this disease will be defeated. I'm proud of our players and staff for making the effort to raise money and help make a difference."
Every member of the Terps squad, including the coaching staff, participated in soliciting Maryland fans entering the February 2 men's basketball game versus North Carolina for a donation.
"I also want to thank all of the generous Terps fans for their contributions and making this possible," continued Frese.
Hoops for Hope is a basketball game centered around hope for early detection, hope for increased survival and hope for a cure. More than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, while more than 40,000 will die of the disease.
NC State coach Yow, sister of Maryland athletic director Deborah A. Yow, is a breast cancer survivor herself.
The February 19 game tips off at 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Fans will be given free pink t-shirts in a show of support of survivors and Coach Yow. For more information log onto www.gopack.com.
