The University of Maryland women's water polo bounced back from a disappointing loss to Bucknell yesterday to bring down the nationally-ranked Princeton Tigers 5-1.
"To keep a team like Princeton to one goal is absolutely amazing" commented Terrapin head coach Carl Salyer. "They're a very good team. We played great defense and we had some girls step up with big goals."
Rachel Jordan and Blaise Stanicic contributed two goals apiece, and Bryndis Klein netted one. Stanicic and Juli Jordan each added two steals, Christen Vagts had three, and Elizabeth Hopkins added one. Laurel Laidlaw and Allie Housel each threw an assist.
On the defensive end, Vagts and Stanicic were successful in shutting down Princeton high-scorer Elyse Colgan, who did not score in the game.
Goalie Marissa Corwin blocked eight while allowing only one goal.
The Terps were up 2-1 at halftime, and 5-1 at the end of the third quarter.
Salyer expressed "All we had to do in that fourth quarter was use the clock, and the girls did a great job of keeping the ball safe and using every shot clock."
He called the victory over No. 16 Priceton "the biggest win in program history" and "a fun game to be a part of."
The Terrapins hope to carry their success to March 21 when they will face Caltech and California Baptist.
