LOS ANGELES - Rachel Jordan scored five goals and Blaise Stanicic fired home the game-winner early Tuesday as Maryland beat Occidental, 11-10, in a women's water polo match.
The victory was Maryland's fourth straight overall and gave the Terps a 3-0 start to their eight-game California trip. Maryland was to play No. 4 Loyola Marymount in a late game on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Maryland swamped Cal Tech, 15-1, and got an overtime goal from Elizabeth Hopkins to earn a 4-3 win at Cal Baptist.
Against Occidental, the Terps trailed 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter. Jordan scored a pair of goals in a five-goal rally, but with the score tied at 10-10, Stanicic fired home the eventual game-winner with 28 seconds left. It was Stanicic's third goal of the game.
Maryland got an ejection with 15 seconds left, but the Terps killed off the power play to seal the win. Marissa Corwin made four saves in goal while playing the decisive second half for the Terps.
In Tuesday's second game, Maryland trailed 3-1 after three quarters against Cal Baptist, but Hopkins scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. Her game-tying goal came with 35 seconds left.
Hopkins scored with 2:38 left in the second extra period, and Maryland's defense was outstanding in preserving the win. The Terps did not allow a goal to Cal Baptist throughout the second half and overtime.
Eight different Maryland players scored in the win at Cal Tech early Tuesday, led by three goals each from Rachel Jordan and Juli Jordan. The Terps lost a shutout against Cal Tech at the buzzer.
