IRVINE, Calif.- The University of Maryland Terrapins stayed with No. 7 San Diego State for the first half, but were outscored 8-2 in the second half to lose 12-6. The Aztecs were able to capitalize on key Terrapin mistakes in the first four possessions of the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
"In the first half we played smart and were deliberate with what we were doing offensively, and we controlled the ball," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer. Despite the final score, Salyer was pleased with his team's first half success and effort throughout the game.
Goal scorers for the Terps were Elizabeth Hopkins with three, Rachel Jordan with two, and Blaise Stanicic with one.
Ashleigh Jobson played the first half in goal, blocking four while allowing four goals scored against. She also contributed two steals. Marissa Corwin blocked six and allowed seven in the third and fourth quarters. Goalie Anna Gossett played the final minutes of the game, blocking one and allowing one.
Against No. 11 UC Irvine, the Terps showed signs of fatigue at the end of an eight-game trip and fell to the Anteaters 10-4.
Although they were down 7-1 at the end of the third quarter, the Terrapins matched UC Irvine's three goals with three of their own in the fourth quarter.
Salyer found it promising that Maryland played hard to the very end of the game even when they were down, and called the Anteaters "good enough to make you pay for your mistakes."
Elizabeth Hopkins led Terrapin scorers with two goals, and Rachel Jordan and Bryndis Klein each added one.
Goalie Ashleigh Jobson played the first three quarters and blocked ten, allowed seven, and had four steals. Anna Gossett blocked one and allowed three in the final quarter.
The Terps finished their trip to California 4-4, and will participate in the ECAC Championships April 1-2 in College Park. Their record is currently 14-8.
