Walters Named Inside Lacrosse's National Player Of The Week

March 28, 2006

College Park, Md. - All-American Joe Walters was named Inside Lacrosse's National Player of the Week and the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week after totaling 12 points in a pair of Terrapin victories last week.

Walters, a Tewaaraton Trophy candidate, started last week in fine fashion, tying his career high with seven points in a 14-2 win over Dartmouth last Tuesday in College Park. The Rochester, N.Y., native, scored four goals and dished three assists in the first half against the Big Green.

The three-time All-American followed up that performance with his first-ever five-goal game to lead the Terps to a 9-6 comeback win at North Carolina on Saturday.

The senior attackman is within striking distance of Maryland's career point and goal scoring records. He currently stands at 134 career goals and needs just 16 more to eclipse Matt Hahn's (1996-98) total of 149. Bob Boniello's (1977-80) all-time points record of 219 is also in jeopardy as Walters is just 25 points away from 220.

Walters, the only current college player to make the 2006 U.S. National Team, is currently ranked fifth in the NCAA in points per game at 4.0. He is also 10th in goals per game (2.43) and 22nd in assists per game (1.57).

Walters and the No. 3-ranked Terrapins (6-1, 2-0 ACC) return to Byrd Stadium this Saturday, April 1, against No. 1 Virginia (9-0, 0-0 ACC) at 1:00 p.m. Maryland would clinch the ACC regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament with a victory over the Cavaliers.
