The University of Maryland women's water polo team beat George Washington 9-4 in Washington, D.C. today, avenging last year's overtime loss. The game was tied 3-3 at halftime, but the Terps went on to outscore the Colonials 4-0 in the third quarter.
Coach Carl Salyer commented "Playing in a shallow-deep pool threw us for a little bit of a loop in the second quarter, but the girls did a great job in the second half to get the lead back and to lock them out of a comeback."
Strong defense and key goals in the second half led to the victory.
High scorers for Maryland were Bryndis Klein with three goals, and Elizabeth Hopkins and Juli Jordan with two apiece. Blaise Stanicic and Christen Vagts each added one.
Klein and Hopkins also threw two assists each, while Stanicic and Rachel Jordan both added one. Steals were contributed by Marissa Corwin with five, Hopkins and Vagts with four, Stanicic with three, Juli Jordan with two, and Rachel Jordan with one.
Corwin played the entire game in goal, blocking nine while allowing only four goals.
Despite being the visiting team, the Terps played in front of an enthusiastic crowd which included members of the University of Maryland men's water polo club team.
Next the Terps will face Bucknell on Friday in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
