Terrapin Water Polo Defeats Harvard, Falls to Bucknell at ECAC Championship

April 1, 2006

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- A timely fourth-quarter scoring run by the University of Maryland women's water polo team allowed the Terrapins to come from behind to defeat Harvard 5-3. The Terps scored three goals in less than a minute and a half to gain the lead.

Harvard had opened the game with a goal on a penalty shot, and Maryland's Blaise Stanicic immediately responded with a goal of her own to the upper right corner. Stanicic had two goals in the game.

Christen Vagts contributed two fourth-quarter goals for the Terrapins, and Juli Jordan also added a goal.

Goalie Marissa Corwin blocked two and allowed two in the first quarter. Freshman Ashleigh Jobson finished out the game in goal, blocking five while allowing only one. Harvard did not score at all in the second half.

The Terrapin victory redeemed a one-point loss to the Crimson on Febrary 18.

In the Terps' second game of the day, Rachel Jordan led scorers with three goals, but Maryland ultimately fell short to Bucknell 10-7. The loss was Maryland's third to Bucknell this season, and the teams will face each other for Maryland's final home game on April 8.

Down 6-2 at halftime, the Terps outscored the Bison 5-4 in the second half.

Scorers for the Terps were Rachel Jordan with three, Stanicic with two, and Vagts and Elizabeth Hopkins with one apiece.

In goal, Corwin blocked two and allowed three in the first quarter. Jobson played the second, third, and fourth quarters and blocked five while allowing seven.

Maryland will resume ECAC Championship play tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.
