PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The University of Maryland women's water polo team faced CWPA Southern Division rival Princeton for the fourth time this season in the CWPA Eastern Championships. The No. 20 Tigers added a third straight win against the Terps, 7-2.
Freshmen Blaise Stanicic and Laurel Laidlaw converted two of the Terrapins' 19 scoring opportunities.
Maryland had numerous quality shot opportunities throughout the game, some foiled by bad luck or strong Princeton goaltending. Maryland head coach Carl Salyer recalled several shots that hit the cross-bar or fell just short of crossing the goal line.
On the defensive end, senior captain Marissa Corwin blocked six and allowed seven in goal. Freshman goalie Ashleigh Jobson finished out the end of the fourth quarter, with no blocks and no goals scored against.
Salyer partly attributed the defeat to the Terps' lack of help defense and 14 turnovers.
Ball-handling was also an issue in Maryland's second game of the day against Brown. After leading the Bears 3-2 at halftime, the Terps ultimately fell to Brown 5-4 on a 4-for-21 shooting effort.
Scorers for the Terps were freshmen Rachel Jordan with two, and Elizabeth Hopkins and Christen Vagts with one goal apiece.
Corwin played the entire game in goal and finished with eight blocks and five goals allowed.
The young Terrapin team obtained experience competing at a high level of water polo in their third season and first trip to the CWPA Eastern Division Championships.
