COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Six individuals have been selected for induction this fall to the University of Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame, athletics department officials announced Thursday.
Five former student-athletes representing six different sports and three decades will join current director of athletics Deborah A. Yow in the Class of 2006 to be inducted on Friday, Nov. 10 at the Inn and Conference Center.
Men's basketball player Nick Davis, women's basketball standout Christy Winters Scott, field hockey player Lisa Buente Rockhill, two-sport star Howie Dare from football and baseball, and men's lacrosse defenseman Mike Thearle are the former student-athletes in the class. Davis will be inducted posthumously.
"We are tremendously proud of this class and feel these individuals have represented the University of Maryland in an exemplary way," said associate athletics director Cheryl Harrison, who chaired the selection process.
"The quality of this class was outstanding and definitely reflects the strong field from which we had to choose during this process," Harrison said. "We appreciate those fans and people who made nominations and the committees who worked to make some very tough decisions in making these selections."
Hall of Famer and former All-American Jack Scarbath is a member of the Hall of Fame Election Committee and talked about the quality and breadth of the nominees.
"I'm very pleased with this class," he said. "I think it covers all the bases. There are many different sports in there and it doesn't just focus on one or two sports... There is always a very broad spectrum of various sports. Since Title IX was enacted, there is an opportunity for many more student-athletes to be considered. Once we pare down the list, we're certainly getting the best of the best to be honored in this process."
Information regarding tickets for the 2006 Hall of Fame Banquet will be available on www.UMTerps.com.
