Record Number of Terps Named To WBCA's Wade Watch

Aug. 18, 2006

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Four players from the National Champion Maryland squad have been named to the "Wade Watch" list, the first time in the history of The State Farm Wade Trophy four players from one team have been selected preseason candidates for the prestigious honor. The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has announced that Marissa Coleman, Shay Doron, Crystal Langhorne and Kristi Toliver are among the 25 preseason candidates for the award, presented annually to the Division I women's basketball national player of the year.

The list is comprised of 25 student-athletes who are members of an NCAA Division I institution and are selected based on the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability. The national awards committee who selects these candidates is comprised of leading basketball coaches, journalists and basketball administrators.

Senior Shay Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) and junior Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) are making repeat appearances on the national-player-of-the-year watch list.

A starter the last three seasons, Doron is a three-time All-ACC pick and was a WBCA Honorable Mention All-American in 2005. She reached the 1,000-point career mark faster than any other Terrapin in school history, before current teammate Langhorne broke the record later in the season.

Langhorne was selected to the Associated Press' and the United States Basketball Writers Association's All-American squads in 2006. She was the Most Valuable Player of the NCAA Albuquerque Regional last year, helping the Terps reach their first Final Four since 1989. She led the national champions in points (17.2 ppg) and rebounds (8.6 rpg) and was the nation's leader in field goal percentage at 67 percent.

Marissa Coleman (Cheltenham, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) and Kristi Toliver (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) had immediate impacts on the team last season, with the two starting a combined 52 games. Coleman, considered one of the top all-around players in the country, was the 2006 ACC Rookie of the Year and was the only freshman in the conference to garner All-ACC honors. On the season, she averaged 13.8 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game, both second on the team. She also recorded eight double-doubles on the season, including in the NCAA title game.

Toliver's biggest performances of the 2005-06 season came in the NCAA Tournament. She scored a career-high 28 points in the overtime win over Utah in the Elite Eight despite a stomach flu, then hit a three-pointer over Duke's Alison Bales with just six seconds remaining in regulation of the National Championship game. Toliver was selected to the Albuquerque Region and Final Four All-Tournament teams for her clutch performances.
