College Park, Md. -
Debbie Yow
Introductory Remarks
"Welcome to this special event to celebrate a unique partnership. Those of us who work in college athletics believe in the value of teamwork. The commitment we celebrate today has been the result of such a team effort. With the extraordinary commitment of $20 million by Chevy Chase Bank, we are now ready to move forth with the expansion of historic Byrd Stadium."
Dr. C.D. Mote, Jr.
On the partnership with Chevy Chase Bank
"We are very excited to be here to announce the newest partnership between Chevy Chase Bank and the University of Maryland. Chevy Chase Bank has long been a supporter of the University and continues to kick the ball through the uprights when it comes to supporting higher education. Our fit together is natural and firm, and our partnership is a model of how a leading university and a leading company can work together to promote higher education in the community. The bank is committed to the community, it's committed to education, and it's committed to the citizens of the State of Maryland. We are thrilled that the bank sees its partnership with this university in the same way."
On Frank Saul, Founder and Chairman of Chevy Chase Bank
"Frank Saul was the very first person that I invited to the president's residence when I became president in 1998, and that was to thank him for another gift from the bank. Frank Saul believes that when you invest in the community, you get it back many fold. The bank is making another contribution to the community with this generous commitment to the University. Frank is an extraordinary business leader who supports a wide range of community organizations. He also understands the importance that athletics plays on a major college campus. This has allowed us to secure our number one recruit, Chevy Chase Bank, to this generous commitment."
B.F. "Frank" Saul II, Founder and Chairman of Chevy Chase Bank
On the partnership with the University of Maryland
"It's a great day for Chevy Chase Bank. We're just thrilled with our new partnership with the University of Maryland. We've been partnered in some way for over ten years. The University of Maryland ranks among the most prestigious research universities in this land. On behalf of all my team members at Chevy Chase Bank - all 5,000 of us - I say thank you for this great opportunity and we look forward to building on this partnership for many years to come."
On Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium
"Chevy Chase Field at Byrd Stadium is going to be a great place for Maryland football, and Maryland's great coach, Ralph Friedgen, is going to continue to fulfill Maryland's wonderful winning tradition."
Governor Bob Ehrlich
On the Maryland football program
"I'm really proud to be here today. Debbie Yow has done a wonderful job with this athletic department. I love bragging about this program, but maybe not for the obvious reason. I played college football, and I love college football, but I also know about the basics of college football. It's not that hard to have a successful program if you're willing to suspend the essential mission of your institution - academics. What I love about this program, though, is that Coach Friedgen told me from minute one that he wants to build a national championship team with real students, and believe me, that is very difficult. Seeing the kinds of kids that he has been able to bring in to compete at the highest level is a compliment to everyone assembled here today. I am very pleased to associate the State of Maryland with what this program represents."
Head Coach Ralph Friedgen
On the fulfillment of this goal
"This is an exciting day for Maryland football. It was a dream of mine. The first day I came here, at the press conference, my thoughts went to expansion. I had this vision a long time ago, and now it's come to fruition, and now I want to thank everyone responsible, - Dr. Yow, Dr. Mote, the entire staff, and especially Chevy Chase Bank and Frank Saul. This is going to send a message about where we're going - not just as a football program, but as a school. There are going to be a lot of recruits listening to this who now know where we're going. The goal is still to win a national championship. I'm not backing down from that. We haven't stopped. This is a major step forward towards where we want to be, and it wouldn't be possible without that help. Thank you so much."
