Redshirt sophomore Gerry Spessard, an infielder/outfielder for the University of Maryland, was recently recognized by Baseball America magazine as one of its top 10 prospects in the New York Collegiate Baseball League this summer.
As a member of the Watertown Wizards organization, the Hagerstown, Md., product batted .278 with six doubles, a triple, and two home runs. Spessard notched 30 RBIs and seven stolen bases while playing first base and both left and right field over 40 games. He was named to the second team NYCBL All-Star squad for his efforts.
Last season, Spessard started 51 games for Maryland, hitting .259 with two homers, 23 RBIs and a team-leading 14 doubles. He also tied for second in the ACC and set a school record with five triples.
He is one of 19 Terrapin players who competed in baseball leagues across the country this past summer.
