COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 6 men's soccer team hosts its first ACC match of the season when NC State visits Ludwig Field for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Saturday night. The game will be televised live by CN8.
About The Game
The Terps own a 40-20-5 record against the Wolfpack.
Maryland will look to avenge its 1-0 loss to the Wolfpack last season. It was the Terps' first loss to NC State in the last 10 meetings and the first time since 1994 that they lost to the Wolfpack in Raleigh.
Terps Shutout The Mount
The Terps got second half goals from freshmen Jason Herrick and Jeremy Hall to lead Maryland to a 2-0 victory on Wednesday night. It was the third goal of the season for both of them.
Senior A.J. Godbolt recorded his third assist of the season, Herrick added his second, and sophomore A.J. Delagarza notched a helper for his first career point at Maryland.
The Terps controlled the pace of the game from the opening whistle. Maryland owned a 29-6 shot advantage and drew eight corner kicks compared to the Mount's none.
Sophomore keeper Chris Seitz stopped three shots to earn his third shutout of the season.
Scouting The Wolfpack
NC State enters the match against the Terps with a 3-3-0 record and a 1-1-0 mark in the ACC.
The Wolfpack defeated No. 7 North Carolina, 3-1, at Chapel Hill and lost to No. 2 Virginia, 2-1.
Alan Sanchez leads the Wolfpack with three goals and El Hadj Cisse has two. Jorge Mora has also accumulated four points with a goal and two assists.
Mora earned NSCAA/adidas All-America honors in high school, and was the 2004 and 2005 Newsday Player of the Year in New York after combining for 36 goals those two seasons.
NC State returns all four defenders from last season's team. Those four players started 72 of a possible 74 games on the backline.
Christopher Widman has allowed nine goals in nine matches for a 1.58 goals against average. He has stopped 15 shots for a .625 save percentage.
Come One, Come All
The returning national champion Terps have drawn quite a crowd at Ludwig Field and on the road this season.
In both of its away matches this year, attendance records have been set at the opponents' respective fields.
At No. 23 Old Dominion on August 27, 3,331 spectators came out to watch the Monarchs battle the Terps. Maryland came out on top, 2-0. That was the largest crowd to ever see a collegiate soccer match at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
At No. 4 Clemson on Friday night, 6,821 people flocked to Historic Riggs Field for the ACC showdown that the Tigers won, 2-1. That was the largest crowd to ever see a regular season match at Riggs.
The largest amount of people to watch a match at the field was a crowd of over 8,000 when Clemson hosted the 1987 national championship that they won.
On September 2, 4,020 fans came to Ludwig Field to watch the Terps defeat No. 10 UCLA, 4-1. Despite poor weather and the postponement of the match from the night before, it was the fifth-largest crowd in Ludwig history.
Newcomers Making Impact
With a relatively young squad, Terps newcomers are making a major impact as three of the top five scorers are all new to College Park.
In the win against Mount St. Mary's, freshmen accounted for five of the seven Terps' points. Freshman Jason Herrick had a goal and an assist and classmate Jeremy Hall notched the other goal.
Herrick has been stellar for Maryland with three goals and two assists this season for eight points, which is second on the team.
Hall has scored three goals along with Herrick and sophomore Graham Zusi, which is second on the team.
Sophomore Rich Costanzo, a transfer from Penn State, has an assist to go with his game winning goal against Binghamton.
Freshmen Omar Gonzalez and Drew Yates have also recorded an assist this season.
Terp newcomers have accounted for almost half of the team's points at 44 percent.
In addition, their 19 points is six more than all of the opposition has put up against Maryland.
Up Next
Maryland will host Penn State on Wednesday, September 20 in a 7:30 p.m. match at Ludwig Field.
The Terps will then head to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on Wake Forest on September 23 in an ACC matchup.
Maryland lost a close 1-0 decision against the Nittany Lions last season and beat Wake twice, once in the ACC Tournament.
