King Named ACC Player of the Week

Sept. 4, 2006

  • Terps Beat UCLA, 4-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior midfielder Stephen King was tabbed the ACC Men's Soccer Player of the Week as he helped lead the No. 1 Terps to a 4-1 win against No. 10 UCLA on Saturday. King had a hand in Maryland's first three tallies with a goal and two assists.

This is the second time this season that King has been recognized. Last week, he was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for recording two goals and an assist in the Terps season opening wins against Old Dominion and Binghamton.

King assisted on the Terps first goal of the UCLA match in the 25th minute when he sent a through ball to freshman Jason Herrick in front of the box. Herrick beat the Bruins keeper to put the Terps up 1-0. Four minutes later, King earned the game-winning goal when Herrick sent a cross into the box that King put away. King's second assist came just 1:16 into the second half when he found freshman Jeremy Hall who put an amazing shot into the back of the net.

King has totaled three goals and three assists for nine points in Maryland's first three matches. He leads the team in all three categories.

King and the rest of the top-ranked Terps return to action tonight when they host Louisville at 7:00 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The women's team opens the doubleheader with a 4:30 p.m. match against UMBC.
