COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 25 Navy snapped Maryland's six-match winning streak as it beat the Terrapins, 25-12, on January 10 at Comcast Pavilion. Sophomore Alex Krom, senior Jason Kiessling, and redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor all came away with wins against the Midshipmen.
Taylor turned in the most impressive performance of the night for Maryland by pinning Tyler Moyer in 1:01. It was his team-leading eighth fall of the season. Krom and Kiessling picked up tight decisions in their bouts. Krom earned a hard-fought win at 141 pounds, 5-4, while Kiessling won in overtime, 6-4, with a takedown in the extra period.
Taylor proved too much for his opponent at 197 pounds as he scored a takedown just 25 seconds in and then battled the defensive Moyer to pin him in just over a minute. Taylor's win brought the Terps deficit to 21-12.
Krom pulled the Terps within 7-3 early in the evening in an exciting match. Krom and Brad Canterbury went scoreless after the first period. In the second period, Canterbury started down for the Mids and Krom stopped his escape attempts for most of the period before he got out with 32 seconds to go. In the third period, Krom and Canterbury traded a few reversals to put Krom up, 4-3, but Canterbury escaped again to tie it at the end of the period. Krom's 1:33 riding time gave him the bonus point to win.
Kiessling held a 3-1 advantage after two periods but his counterpart at 165, Justin Jacobs, scored an escape and a takedown to make it 4-3 in his favor. Kiessling escaped his grasp with a little over a minute to go and the two ended deadlocked. Kiessling ended the match quickly in the extra session when he recorded a takedown in just 37 seconds.
The Terps will remain at Comcast on Saturday, January 13 when North Carolina and No. 15 Illinois come to College Park. The Terps will take on the Tar Heels at noon and then the Illini at 4:00 p.m. All parking and entrance information will remain the same as on Wednesday night due to the men's basketball game in Comcast Center at 2:00 p.m.
