GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior Jason Kiessling has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season, announced yesterday by the conference office. Kiessling earned the honor after going 3-0 last week with two of his wins coming against nationally ranked opponents and the other coming in the ACC opener against North Carolina.
Kiessling is the second student-athlete in the conference to win the award twice this season as North Carolina's Spencer Nadolsky has also been honored two times. Maryland has been honored the most this season with three ACC Wrestlers of the Week. Kiessling last got the award on December 4 and junior Charlie Pinto was tabbed on November 20.
Kiessling improved his overall record to 20-5 and his dual mark to 14-2 with a pair of decisions against ranked opponents on Saturday and a 3-0 week. He now has 12 straight wins in dual action. His first win came against Justin Jacobs of No. 25 Navy, 6-4, in overtime on Wednesday night. Kiessling recorded a takedown 37 seconds into the extra session to earn the win.
On Saturday, he first beat No. 12 Keegan Mueller of UNC, 2-1. Kiessling recorded a takedown late in the second period and that is all he would need as he held off Mueller in the third period for the win. Against No. 14 Roger Smith-Bergsrud of No. 16 Illinois, Kiessling held off a late rally to get a 7-4 win. He had a 5-1 lead going into the third, but Smith-Bergsrud managed to make it close at 5-4 with under a minute left. An escape and the riding time bonus point gave Kiessling the 7-4 decision.
Kiessling and the Terps are back in action this Saturday when they travel to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech at 2:00 p.m.
