COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior midfielder A.J. Godbolt was selected 32nd overall in the MLS Supplemental Draft on January 18. Godbolt was taken by the Kansas City Wizards with the sixth pick in the third round and is the third member of the Terrapins to be drafted by an MLS team this year.
Godbolt adds to the list of Maryland student-athletes taken by the MLS. Junior midfielder Maurice Edu was the first overall pick in the SuperDraft last week when Toronto FC called his name. He is the second Terp to be taken first overall in the MLS SuperDraft. Sophomore keeper Chris Seitz was taken three picks later at No. 4 by Real Salt Lake.
Godbolt, one of the best crossers in the country in the collegiate game, is sixth in the career assists record book at Maryland with 23. In 2005, his 13 assists was one shy of the single-season record of 14 shared by Gino Ferrin (1985) and Keith Beach (1998).
Godbolt was named to the All-College Cup team in 2005 after helping the Terps to its first national championship since 1968. In the 4-1 semifinal win against SMU, he recorded an assist when Jason Garey scored in the 47th minute to give the Terps a 2-0 lead.
Godbolt is also one of three Maryland student-athletes in program history to tally three assists in a match. He did it against St. John's on September 10, 2004 in a 5-2 victory in the Maryland/adidas Classic.
In 2006, Godbolt played in 15 matches and started 14 of them. He recorded a goal and four assists for six points and his goal proved to be the game-winner against NC State on September 16. In his career in College Park, Godbolt played in 74 matches and earned 52 starts while recording 29 points on three goals and 23 assists.
