The Maryland gymnastics team travels to Lexington, Ky., this Friday to compete in a quad-meet against host No. 20 Kentucky of the Southeast Conference and two East Atlantic Gymnastics League members, No. 17 West Virginia and No. 37 North Carolina. The meet begins at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Coliseum.
No. 41 Maryland (2-3) struggled at Pittsburgh last Friday finishing fourth (189.375) in a quad meet against West Virginia, Michigan State and Pitt. Angela Ferg turned in the Terps' season high score on the vault, 9.850, tying for first place. Ferg and freshman Talia Tossone tied for third place on the balance beam, scoring 9.750. The team's only all-arounder, freshman Brandi George, placed sixth with a 38.350.
"Last Sunday the team went back to work with a full-blown practice. The athletes were very receptive to our directions," said head coach Bob Nelligan. "I look forward to them competing much better in Kentucky."
Maryland's season average is 190.563. (Vault 48.0, Uneven Bars 47.7625, Balance Beam 47.6125, Floor 47.1875)
Notes on the Competition
University of Kentucky (0-2)
The Wildcats are coming off losses from their first two meets; hosting No. 2 Georgia and visiting No. 10 Auburn. Kentucky has a team average score of 193.975. This is the first time the Wildcats will face non-Southeast Conference competition this season.
University of North Carolina (4-0)
The Tar Heels are coming off two wins from their home-opener and first road trip; hosting William & Mary and traveling to the George Washington Invitational. Senior Christine Robella has won the all-around in both meets and was named EAGL Gymnast of the Week for the week of January 15-22.
West Virginia University (4-1)
The Mountaineers split their home-opening tri-meet against Michigan and JMU, scoring 194.800. They won the quad meet (193.150) at Pitt last Friday. West Virginia is led by senior No. 20 Janae Cox ; Cox has won the all-around is both meets this season, averaging a 39.075.
