
Men's Soccer Hands Out Awards At Annual Banquet

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's soccer team handed out its 2006 season awards yesterday as the squad held its annual banquet. Six Terrapins were honored with awards for their performances on the field and in the classroom.
The Terrapins celebrated their 16-5-1 season, which included a trip to the NCAA Third Round and record-breaking crowds wherever they traveled. In five away matches in 2006, Maryland drew three record crowds which included dates at Old Dominion (3,331), Clemson (6,821), and Wake Forest (4,413). Ludwig Field saw more fans than it ever has in history as 40,907 spectators flowed through the gates to watch Maryland play. Three of the top five crowds in history at Ludwig came this season with Duke earning a record 6,489 fans.
Maryland's three fifth-year seniors earned the 2006 Coaches Award, presented to the team members who exemplify loyalty, dedication, and selfless commitment to the program. David Glaudemans, A.J. Godbolt, and Pat Wilson were all recipients of the award.
The Terrapins' two mainstays in the midfield, Maurice Edu and Stephen King, were honored with the 2006 Peter Lowery Award, presented to the team members who exemplify academic excellence, leadership, and distinguished citizenship on campus.
Edu also earned the 2006 John Carlson Award presented to the Oustanding Team Member and King was named the 2006 Offensive Most Valuable Player.
Edu, drafted No. 1 overall by Toronto FC in the MLS SuperDraft, won numerous awards this postseason. He was a NSCAA First Team All-American, All-ACC First Team selection, and a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy. This season, he scored five goals and assisted on four others as the country's top defensive midfielder. Four of his goals were game-winners.
King earned numerous honors for his efforts on and off the field this season. He was named to the 2006 NSCAA/adidas College Men Scholar All-America Third Team and to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team. He was a Hermann Trophy semifinalist as well and was a Second Team All-ACC honoree. King, the integral part to the Maryland offense, notched six goals and seven assists this past season.
The 2006 Defensive Most Valuable Player was Chris Seitz, who was drafted No. 4 overall by Real Salt Lake in the MLS SuperDraft. The 6-4 keeper, regarded as the best in the collegiate game, was a NSCAA Third Team All-American, a Soccer America College MVP, an All-ACC First Team selection, and the 2006 ACC Defensive Player of the Year. He leaves the Maryland program as the career leader in goals against average at 0.77.
