Third-Ranked Maryland Travels to Georgia Tech
Fourth-ranked Maryland heads to Georgia Tech to open the second half the ACC season. The Yellow Jackets, who have lost the last four games to the Terps, host the Terrapins on Thursday, Feb. 1.
Georgia Tech has lost its last two games, while Maryland is coming off just his second loss of the season. The Terps have been ranked in the top five in the nation every week this season and 18-straight weeks in the AP poll, dating back to last season.
The last time the Terps visited Georgia Tech was in 2004, when the Yellow Jackets edged the Terps, 58-57.
The game can be heard on the University of Maryland's WMUC Radio and can be watched on www.ACCSelect.com. Links to live audio and video are available on www.umterps.com.
Game vs. Duke Sold Out
The Terps' game vs. Duke on Feb. 18, also the final home game of the season, is SOLD OUT. The sellout will be just the second in Comcast Center for a women's basketball game and the third in school history.
The Terps played in front of a capacity crowd on Jan. 28 against North Carolina, the first-ever sell out of a women's basketball game at Comcast Center. It also set the all-time ACC women's basketball attendance record. The game against the Blue Devils will tie that record.
In the Rankings
Maryland is making its 17th-straight appearance in the Associated Press' top five and its 18th-straight in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. With only two losses on their record, both coming against teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 this week, Maryland is ranked fourth in the nation.
Five Maryland opponents are ranked in the top 25 this week in both polls. The ACC continues to occupy the top three spots in the rankings for the sixth-straight week.
Duke holds on to the No. 1 position, followed by North Carolina. The Terps slipped to No. 4 after falling to UNC. George Washington is knocking on the door of the top 10, staying at No. 11 in the AP and inching up to No. 12 in the coaches rankings. Middle Tennessee State cracked the top 20 in both polls, while Michigan State is 23rd in the coaches' poll.
Mississippi dropped out of the polls this week but is still receiving votes. Florida State, NC State and Temple are all receiving votes in one or both polls.
The Terps garnered the No. 1 spot in the preseason poll, the first time in the history of the program they opened the season as the top team in the nation.
Terps Break ACC Attendance Record
The Terps' sold-out game vs. the Tar Heels on Jan. 28 set a new ACC single-game attendance record for a women's basketball game. Fans filled the 17,950-seat arena to support the Terps. Maryland will match that sell out crowd against Duke on Feb. 18.
The 17,950 in attendance for the game against the Tar Heels ranks as the third-largest crowd in the country this season.
Maryland boasts the top six crowds ever in ACC women's basketball history, and eight of the top 10.
Terps Draw Big Crowds
For the first time in the program's history, more than 100,000 fans have come to College Park to support their beloved Terps.
The Terps surpassed the 100,000-mark in the sell out vs. North Carolina. Last year, the Terps had over 77,000 fans attend 13 homes game which had been the record heading into this season. Maryland also ranked 21st in the nation in average home attendance, drawing 4,813 fans per game. This year, the Terrapins are sixth in the nation in average home attendace at 4,813 spectators per game.
On the road, the Terps are attracting big crowds as well. They have played in front of two capacity crowds (at Loyola and at Duke) and have also played in near-sold out games. The Terps' road games (not including neutral site games at the Junkanoo Jam) have been their opponents' biggest or second-highest crowd of the season in all but one away game.
Maryland boasts four of the top 40 attendances in the nation this season. Only Tennessee and Connecticut have more attendances in the top 40. Aside from the sell-out crowd on Jan. 28, the 12,295 fans that supported the Terps for the Michigan State game ranks 20th in the nation, while the 11,118 count for the Virginia game is the 34th most. The announced attendance of 10,526 against Wake Forest is also among the top 40 crowds in the nation.
Game After Game
Among the many benchmarks senior Shay Doron has achieved, the Israel native is about to reach another. If it seems like Doron has been here forever it is because no other Terrapin has worn the Maryland jersey more times than Christy Winters (1987-90) and Doron, both of which have played in 123 career games.
Doron is also on the verge of starting in the most games in school history. She has been etched in the starting lineup 108 times, nine games fewer than former Terp Marche Strickland (1999-2002), who holds the school record.
About Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech has won its last two games and comes into the game with a 13-8 overall record and 4-3 in the ACC. The four conference victories doubles last year's win total. The Yellow Jackets return home to host the Terps after four-straight road games.
GT is averaging only 66.5 points per game, but is one of the top five defensive teams in the ACC, allowing just 58.4 points per game. The Jackets are third in the ACC in steals, averaging 12.67 thefts per game. They also force opponents to throw the ball away, averaging a +2.62 turnover margin, which also ranks third in the league.
Georgia Tech is led by Stephanie Higgs, who leads the team with 14.8 points per game. Janie Mitchell and Chioma Nnamaka are averaging just over 13 ppg. Mitchell's 6.4 rebounds per game is also the best on the team .
SERIES VS. GT: Maryland leads the all-time series, 39-15, winning the last four in a row, including a second-round ACC Tournament win last year. The Terps' last loss to GT was in Atlanta, 58-57, on Feb. 15, 2004.
Coming Up
Maryland returns home for a Super Bowl Sunday matchup against Boston College. BC is coming off an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament last year. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. and can be heard on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network.
