King Named First Team Academic All-American
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 19 Maryland men's soccer team was awarded the 13th seed in the 2007 Division I Men's Soccer Championship, giving the Terrapins a first round bye and home field advantage in the second round. The Terps will host the winner of the first round game between Liberty and Loyola on Wednesday, November 28 at 5:00 p.m.
This marks the sixth consecutive season under head coach Sasho Cirovski that the men's soccer team has earned a seed and a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps were seeded second in 2002 and 2003, third in 2004, first in 2005, and fifth in 2006.
Liberty (13-4-2) earned the automatic bid from the Big South Conference after winning the conference tournament for the first time. The Flames beat UNC Asheville, Winthrop, and Radford in the championship match to earn the title. Maryland and Liberty have met just once all-time in the Virginia Soccer Classic in 2001, a 2-1 triumph for the Terps.
Loyola (18-3-0) won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Greyhounds defeated Siena, Canisius, and St. Peter's in the tournament, all by way of shutout.
Loyola and Maryland are familiar foes on the pitch having met 39 times before with the Terps taking 25 wins. The last meeting between the two teams came in 2006 when Maryland took a 1-0 decision. The Greyhounds defeated Maryland in the 2001 NCAA Tournament, 1-0 in double overtime, when they were seeded and earned a first round bye.
Liberty and Loyola will play their first round game on Saturday, November 24 at 1:00 p.m. in Baltimore.
The 2007 College Cup will be held in Cary, N.C. at the SAS Soccer Complex. Semifinal action is slated for Friday, December 14 and the national championship game will be held on Sunday, December 16.
