The Terps have been on a torrid pace and are in the midst of playing 14 games in the first 31 days of the season. Have way through the stretch, Maryland has won its first seven games, posting a 7-0 record to start the season for the second-straight year.
On the other hand, the Bruins, who is receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll this week, has played just three games, winning by a +14.7 point margin. Sunday's game will be their third-straight home game.
The California road swing will conclude in Los Angeles, after coming away with a 75-71 win over UC Santa Barbara on Friday.
Last Time Out
Marissa Coleman went 18-for-20 from the charity stripe, en route to a career-high 30 points, as Maryland avoided an upset, defeating the home team UC Santa Barbara, 75-71.
Three players reached double figures, with Kristi Toliver netting 19, while senior Laura Harper recorded her third double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Maryland outrebounded its seventh-straight opponent, 37-35, and connected on 36-of-46 free throws to hang on to the win.
UCSB, looking for redemption from a 105-44 loss to the Terps last season, shot 41.7 percent from the field and led by as much as three points in the second half. But Maryland pulled away, making free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
About the Terps
Maryland is 7-0 for the second-straight year and three of the Terrapins' wins have come against ranked opponents. The Terps also captured the Preseason WNIT title last weekend.
Maryland has had at least one player with a double-double in six of its seven games, posting 10 double-doubles overall. Seniors Laura Harper and Jade Perry, and junior Kristi Toliver have each posted three so far this season.
Leading the way offensively for the Terrapins is junior Kristi Toliver, this week's ACC Player of the Week. She is first on the team in scoring, netting 19.0 points per game, while dishing out an ACC-best 8.3 assists per game.
Senior Jade Perry leads the team grabbing 8.1 rebounds per game, but Harper and Coleman are close behind, grabbing 7.9 boards a game.
Maryland has been lethal from three-point range, twice tying the school record for threes in a game. The Terps knocked down 12 treys in the wins over Notre Dame and Loyola, while shooting 45.3 percent from that range in the seven games.
Four Terrapins are averaging double figures and three are grabbing at least 5.0 boards a game, outrebounding their opponents by 14.1 margin.
About the Bruins
UCLA has won its first three games of the season, most recently coming off a dominating 107-83 win over Cal Poly on Nov. 20. Five players are averaging double figures, led by Lindsey Plummier, the team's second leading scorer from a year ago.
Plummier averages a team-high 15.3 points per game, also grabbing a team-best 9.3 rebounds per game. The Bruins offense has scored no less than 79 points, allowing 74.3 ppg through its first three games.
The Bruins returned three starters and seven letterwinners overall. They went 14-18 last year, including 7-11 in the Pac-10. Among the losses was Noelle Quinn, a WNBA draft pick and a finalist for the WBCA's Wade Trophy.
In her 16th season with UCLA, Kathy Olivier has posted a 218-193 record. A 1982 graduate of UNLV, she has coached the Bruins to five NCAA Tournament appearances, the last one coming in 2006.
SERIES HISTORY: Maryland leads the all-time series, 3-2. In the last meeting between the teams in 1995, the Terrapins lost, 82-70, in Los Angeles. The Terps won in Dec. 1981 on the Bruins' home court, however, 81-74. Since head coach Brenda Frese has taken over the helm at Maryland, the Terps have played just one Pac-10 squad. Arizona has been on the schedule the last three seasons, with Maryland winning each of those games.
Coleman Handles Gauchos
Blue and gold seems to make junior Marissa Coleman's eyes turn red. In her two career games against UC Santa Barbara, Coleman has put up the games of her career. In last year's 105-44 win on Dec. 2, 2006 in Comcast Center, she made history recording the first triple-double in school history, tallying 15 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. In the 75-71 victory at the The Thunderdome, she scored a career-high 30 points, going 18-for-20 from the free throw line. It was the 40th 30-point game in school history.
1,000 point Countdown...
Two Terrapins are nearing their 1,000th-career point.
Senior Laura Harper notched her 900th-career point against the Sooners and has netted 980 points to date, while junior Kristi Toliver also netted her 900th point against LSU and has 9935 for her career.
National player of the year candidate and senior Crystal Langhorne is third on Maryland's all-time scoring list with 1,711. She holds the school record for fastest to 1,000 points, needing just 60 games. Junior Marissa Coleman scored her 1,000th point against Delaware in her 74th-career game.
Coleman Nets 30
Junior Marissa Coleman's 30-point performance in the 75-71 win at UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 23, 2007, was the 40th time in school history a Terrapin has netted 30 points in a game. She also became the 16th player in school history to achieve the feat.
Senior Crystal Langhorne is the only other current Terrapin to score at least 30 points in a game and has done so five times in her career. In 2005-06, she had four 30-point outings, a school single-season record.
Coming Up
Maryland's 14 games in the first 31 days of the season continues as the Terrapins host Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. The game can be watched on ACC Select.
