Terps Host Ohio State for Inaugural Big Ten/ACC Challenge
The inaugural Big Ten/ACC Challenge comes to College Park when third-ranked Maryland hosts #19/17 Ohio State on Friday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU and can be heard on the Maryland Sports Radio Network (links available at www.umterps.com).
The Terps are looking to become the first team in the nation to win 10 games. It is the fourth ranked opponent Maryland will face this season, already defeating Oklahoma, Notre Dame and LSU.
The Buckeyes are the last non-conference opponent to beat Maryland on its home court. OSU's last visit to Comcast Center was during the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Ohio State defeated the Terps, 75-65, in the second round.
On Friday, Maryland will also be hosting the World's Largest Baby shower in honor of Maryland head coach Brenda Frese, who is pregnant with twins. Fans are encouraged to bring a new and unused packaged toy to donate to the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots.
World's Largest Baby Shower
To help celebrate head coach Brenda Frese's pregnancy, Maryland fans are invited to attend the world's largest baby shower on Friday, Nov. 30 when the Terps take on Ohio State in the inaugural Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Fans are encouraged to bring a new and unused toy to the game. All donations will go to the Washington, D.C., chapter of Toys for Tots.
About the Terps
Maryland is 9-0 this season for the second-straight year, with three victories coming over ranked opponents. The Terps will face its fourth ranked opponent when it hosts Ohio State in the inaugural Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Maryland has had at least one player with a double-double in eight of its 10 games, posting 12 double-doubles overall. Seniors Laura Harper and Jade Perry, and junior Kristi Toliver have each posted three so far this season. Junior Marissa Coleman had recorded two. Making a return to the starting lineup, Crystal Langhorne had her first double-double of the season in the win over Pittsburgh.
Leading the way offensively for the Terrapins is junior Kristi Toliver, who is averaging a team-best 19.4 points and 7.8 assists per game. Four Terps in all are averaging double-digit scoring and two more are just under 10 ppg.
Coleman and Harper each average a team-high 8.1 rebounds per game. They have led the team in rebounding a combined five times in the Terps' nine games so far this season.
Maryland has been lethal from three-point range, twice tying the school record for threes in a game. The Terps knocked down 12 treys in the wins over Notre Dame and Loyola, while shooting 46.5 percent from that range in the nine games.
The nation's leader in rebounding margin the last two years, Maryland is outrebounding its opponents by +13.6 rpg.
About the Buckeyes
The Buckeyes are 5-1, snapping a five-game win streak with a 67-58 loss to Auburn on Nov. 25. Friday's contest will be OSU's second road game of the season and the first since Nov. 17.
Wade Trophy and Wooden Award candidate Marscilla Packer leads Ohio State with 17.7 points per game, with teammate Jantel Lavender not far behind with 16.7 ppg. OSU has averaged 40.5 rebounds per game this season, led by Lavender's 9.3 rpg, limiting its opponents to 28.7 rpg.
Ohio State's opponents have scored less than 70 points in its six games, with half netting less than 50.
Having captured three-straight Big Ten titles, Ohio State was picked to win the conference crown again this season, despite the loss of All-American Jessica Davenport, who was drafted in the WNBA. Packer and Star Allen earning a spot on the preseason All-Big Ten squad. Last year, the Buckeyes were upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Marist, who reached the Sweet 16. OSU lost nine letterwinners and three starters from last year's team. Nine players on the roster are freshmen and sophomores.
The Buckeyes are mentored by Jim Foster, who is in his fifth season at the helm. In his 30th year of collegiate coaching, he approaching the 650-win mark, boasting a 839-258 career record. He has led Ohio State to a 135-33 mark during his tenure.
SERIES HISTORY: Ohio State leads the all-time series, 2-1. The NCAA Tournament meeting at Comcast Center in 2005 was the first between the teams since 1988. The Buckeyes won the last meeting, 75-65, in the second round of the tournament, which was hosted by Maryland. It was the only game in the series played on either teams' home court. The Terps beat the Buckeyes, 81-66, in the 1988 NCAA Tournament, the only win in the series for the Terps.
November to Remember
This November has been a record-breaking month for the Terrapins. Maryland's 10 games are the most for the month of November in the history of the program. Its nine wins to date are the most wins Maryland has recorded during the month, as well.
Buckeye Ties
The Terps will have at least one Buckeye rooting for Maryland in Friday's meeting. Sixth-year assistant coach Erica Floyd is a 1993 graduate of Ohio State, helping OSU capture the 1989 Big Ten title.
Coming Up
Terps get the weekend off but start off a four-game week traveling to #5/6 Rutgers for the Jimmy V Classic on Monday, Dec. 3. It will be Maryland's second-straight ranked opponent it will face and the fifth this season.
The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 and tips off at 7 p.m.
