Junior midfielder Dan Groot was named to the Face-Off Yearbook preseason All-America second team and five other Terps were also named as Inside Lacrosse announced the teams today.
Five other Terps, senior defender Joe Cinosky and senior attackman Max Ritz, junior midfielder Jeremy Sieverts and sophomore defender Brian Farrell and sophomore goalie Brian Phipps, were named preseason honorable mention All-Americans.
Groot, a native of Canandaigua, N.Y., earned third team All-America honors in 2007 as a sophomore. He finished third on the team in goals and points with 21 and 32, respectively. Of his 21 goals, an amazing eight came on the Terps' man-up unit and Groot also tallied three game-winning goals, including the overtime winner at Navy on April 6.
Cinosky, a native of Boonton, N.J., makes the preseason list for the second straight season. He finished the 2007 season among Maryland's team leaders in groundballs and caused turnovers. He finished his junior season with 26 groundballs and 19 caused turnovers.
Ritz is Maryland's top returning scorer after compiling 49 points on 24 goals and 25 assists. As a junior he ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in assists per game (1.56). The Wayne, Pa., native also finised 2007 ranked fifth in the ACC in points per game (3.06) and seventh in goals per game (1.5).
Sieverts, a native of Lutherville, Md., earns his first preseason honor in his second season with the Terps after transferring prior to the 2007 season. Sieverts finished fourth on the team in points, totaling 21 on 15 goals and six assists.
Farrell enjoyed a tremendous freshman season last year as a long-stick defensive midfielder. The Baltimore, Md., native, ranked in the team's top 10 in points (9), goals (5), assists (4), groundballs (31) and caused turnovers (13).
Phipps, a native of Annapolis, Md., was named the ACC's Freshman of the Year in 2007 after taking over the goalie duties when injuries sidelined the Terps's two other netminders. All Phipps did for the Terps was win eight of 13 starts and finish the season ranked eighth nationally with a .591 save percentage.
