COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland senior Laura Harper was voted the Atlantic Coast Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. She is the fourth different Terrapin to garner the weekly honor, as the Terps have claimed four of the eight weekly accolades this season.
Senior Laura Harper (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) led the Terps to a 71-65 come-from-behind win at James Madison on Dec. 20, snapping the Dukes' 30-game home win streak, which was the longest active streak in NCAA Division I at the time. Harper scored a season-high 24 points, going 8-for-10 from the floor and the charity stripe. She also grabbed nine rebounds. Ranked third in blocks all-time at Maryland, she recorded another against JMU, her fourth-straight game with a block and her 12th game this season.
The weekly nod is the first of Harper's career. She was selected the ACC's Rookie of the Week in 2005. Teammates senior Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro), junior Kristi Toliver (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) and junior Marissa Coleman (Cheltenham, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) have each earned the weekly honor this season. No other conference team has had as many selections.
The fifth-ranked Terrapins host the Terrapin Classic Friday-Sunday, Dec. 28-30. Richmond and UMBC open the round-robin tournament on Friday, Dec. 28 at 1 p.m., then Maryland takes on the Spiders on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. and UMBC on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m.
