COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the second time this year, Maryland's Marissa Coleman was voted the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced today. Coleman helped Maryland capture the Terrapin Classic crown over the weekend. The selection is the fifth garnered by a Terrapin this season, improving the school record for most selections in a season.
Junior Marissa Coleman (Cheltenham, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) had an outstanding weekend, putting her versatility on display. She averaged 20.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and shot better than 83 percent from three-point range in the two wins of the home tournament, en route to all-tournament honors.
In the win the 89-59 win over Richmond, Coleman scored 18 of her 23 points in the first half. She posted her team-leading sixth double-double of the season, grabbing 10 boards. She was 6-for-8 from the floor, including a 4-for-5 effort from behind the three-point arc. Coleman also went 6-for-7 from the charity stripe.
In the closing game of the tournament against UMBC, Coleman helped Maryland set the ACC record for threes in a game, knocking down six of the team's league-record 17 treys. The six threes also set a Comcast Center record and was a career high for Coleman. She filled the box score, grabbing eight rebounds, while dishing out six assists and had a steal and a block.
Coleman is averaging 16.5 ppg, which is second on the team, and is tied for first with 8.1 rpg. After going 10-for-12 (83.3 percent) from three-point range over the weekend, she is shooting 43.6 percent on the season from long range.
Coleman was selected ACC Player of the Week for the opening week of the season and it was the third weekly honor of her career. A Terp earns the honor for the second-consecutive week after senior Laura Harper (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) was picked last week. A Maryland player has been voted ACC Player of the Week a school-record five times in nine weeks of the season.
Senior Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) and Kristi Toliver (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) have also been picked ACC Players of the Week this season. No other league school has had as many selections.
The fifth-ranked Terrapins open ACC action on Thursday, Jan. 3 at Wake Forest. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
