Terps CLose Out Virginia Series
Sixth-ranked Maryland closes out the regular-season series against Virginia, traveling to Charlottesville, Va., on Sunday, Feb. 11. The game will be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Network (Comcast SportsNet in the Baltimore/Washington area) and can be heard on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network.
The Terps will be making their first visit to the Cavaliers' new home, John Paul Jones arena. Maryland bid farewell to University Hall with a victory, its first on Virginia's home court since 1992 and only the fifth all-time. UVA has won 21 of 26 meetingsin Charlottesviile, Va.
Game Vs. Duke Sold Out
The Terps' game vs. Duke on Feb. 18, also the final home game of the season, is SOLD OUT. The sellout will be just the second in Comcast Center for a women's basketball game and the third in school history.
The Terps played in front of a capacity crowd on Jan. 28 against North Carolina, the first-ever sell out of a women's basketball game at Comcast Center. It also set the all-time ACC women's basketball attendance record. The game against the Blue Devils will tie that record.
Last Time Out
Maryland clinched its fourth straight non-losing season in the ACC with a 78-59 win over Virginia Tech on Thursday, Feb. 8. The streak is the program's longest since the 1993-94 season when they had seven straight years of a .500 record or better. Maryland's next ACC win will clinch back-to-back conference winning seasons for the first time since the 1992-93 campaign.
Sophomore guard Kristi Toliver scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Junior Crystal Langhorne added 15 points, while sophomore Marissa Coleman chipped in with 12.
The Terps trailed 20-15 early in the first half, until a 21-4 run, which included eight points by Toliver, gave Maryland the lead for good.
Maryland's defense limited the Hokies to 26 second-half points. It also marked the second-straight game the Terps have held an opponent under 60 points, after six games of allowing 60 points or more.
About Virginia
Virginia is 14-10 overall and is 3-6 in the ACC. The Cavaliers started the conference slate at 2-1 before dropping four in a row. UVA ended that skid with a win over Miami on Feb. 4. It is currently on a two-game win streak after picking up a non-conference victory over North Florida on Feb. 6.
Lynda Littles paces the Virginia offense, averaging 16.4 points per game, followed Monica Wright's 14.4 ppg. Wright was tabbed the preseason ACC Rookie of the Year and currently leads all conference freshmen in that category. Sharnee Zoll, who is third on the team in scoring, leads the ACC with nearly six assists per game.
The Cavs are guided by Debbie Ryan, who is in her 30th season at the Virginia helm.
SERIES VS. UVA: Maryland dominated the first eight years of the series, going 11-2 from 1977-84. From that point on, the Cavaliers have had the best of the Terps, going 38-15. UVA won 17 in a row from 1994-2000, until the Terps broke that streak. Since 2004, however, Maryland has won four of the last six meetings, including the clash in College Park in January.
Coleman, Langhorne Make Wooden Cut
Maryland's Crystal Langhorne and Marissa Coleman were named to the Midseason Wooden All-American team and are among the top 20 candidates for the John R. Wooden Award, presented to the nation's top women's basketball player. The list is based on individual player performances and team records through the first half of the season.
Langhorne and Coleman have helped the Terrapins to a top five national ranking for most of the season and the team's second-straight 20-win season.
Langhorne makes the midseason cut for the second-straight year. She leads the nation in field goal percentage and leads the team in scoring and rebounding. Coleman is second on the team in scoring and rebounding. She was the first player in school history to post a triple-double on Dec. 2 against UC Santa Barbara.
Balancing Act
For the second-consecutive year, Maryland boasts a balanced attack and a high-powered offense with numerous options as five Terps are averaging double-digit scoring.
The Terps have had at least four players score in double figures in all but five games. Five times the team has had six players reach double digits, most recently in the blowout victory at Miami. The offense is, once again, one of the best in the nation ranking second overall and second in the ACC, as well.
During last year's championship run, five players averaged double figures, the only team from a major conference to accomplish that feat. The Terps' offense was second in the nation with an average of 83.3 ppg, the highest in the program since 1988-89.
Coming Up
Maryland closes out a two-game road swing, traveling down to Florida State on Thursday, Feb. 15. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2 with Pam Ward and Nancy Lieberman calling the game.
