LA JOLLA, Calif.- The University of Maryland women's water polo team faced No. 11 Loyola Marymount today to open the Terrapins' 2007 season. The Terps fell to the Lions 13-6 in the Triton Invitational match-up, hosted by the University of California at San Diego.
The Lions took an early lead, with a 5-2 advantage going into halftime. The Terps would not score again until the fourth quarter, when they out-scored LMU 4-3.
The strong finish was not enough for the Terps to overcome the deficit, though.
"We made some minor mistakes that LMU is a good enough team to capitalize on," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer. "I think we competed better than the score shows. We learned we can play at the top level out here in California."
Sophomore Elizabeth Hopkins and freshman Shannon Simerly led Terps scorers with two goals apiece, and sophomore Elizabeth Eicks and senior co-captain Allie Houseal each contributed one.
On the defensive end of the pool, senior goalie Marissa Corwin blocked four in the first half. Sophomore Ashleigh Jobson added two blocks, and junior goalie Anna Gossett blocked four in the final five minutes of the game.
Next up for the Terps is division rival Princeton at 2:00 p.m. PT.
