No. 18 Princeton Tops Terps 15-12

Feb. 10, 2007

LA JOLLA, Calif.- In their second match-up at the University of California at San Diego's Triton Invitational, the University of Maryland women's water polo team nearly defeated division rival Princeton with a strong offensive effort. The Terrapins led the No. 18 Tigers 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, but the Tigers capitalized on Maryland turnovers to take the 15-12 win.

"We had a great opportunity with Princeton being tired from a tough overtime loss to UCSD earlier today," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer.

Salyer commended the Terps' offensive effort, but cited the need for improved ball protection. "We threw the ball away and allowed Princeton to get some easy goals off the counter-attack against us," said Salyer.

Freshman Shannon Simerly led Maryland scorers with four goals, making her the Terps' high scorer for the second game in a row. Sophomores Rachel Jordan and Elizabeth Hopkins each contributed three goals, and Christen Vagts and Blaise Stanicic added the remaining two.

Senior co-captain Marissa Corwin played the entire game in goal, amassing seven blocks.
