Terps Travel to FSU for Key Matchup
Sixth-ranked Maryland travels to Florida State on Thursday, Feb. 15 for a key matchup, which could have postseason implications. As the regular season winds down, both teams are fighting to remain in the top four in the ACC in order to receive a first-round bye in the conference tournament which begins in early March.
No team out of the top five has lost in Tallahassee, Fla. The Seminoles' only setbacks on its home court have been to No. 1 Duke and No. 2 North Carolina. Maryland's last win in Tallahassee was in 2003.
Maryland clinched back-to-back winning seasons in the ACC for the first time since the 1992-93 campaign with its win at Virginia. The Terps are looking for their ninth conference victory, which would make it only the 10th time they have won at least nine ACC games in a season.
The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 with Pam Ward and Nancy Lieberman calling the action. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
Game Vs. Duke Sold Out
The Terps' game vs. Duke on Feb. 18, also the final home game of the season, is SOLD OUT. The sellout will be just the second in Comcast Center for a women's basketball game and the third in school history.
The Terps played in front of a capacity crowd on Jan. 28 against North Carolina, the first-ever sell out of a women's basketball game at Comcast Center. It also set the all-time ACC women's basketball attendance record. The game against the Blue Devils will tie that record.
Last Time Out
Maryland clinched its second-straight ACC winning season for the first time since 1992-93 with a victory at Virginia, 83-74, only the sixth time in the history of the series the Terrapins had won in Charlottesville, Va.
Midseason Wooden All-Americans Crystal Langhorne and Marissa Coleman had double-doubles in the first half against the Cavaliers, as the Terp ran out to a 47-27 lead and pushed the advantage to as much as a 28-point margin with less than 14 minutes remaining in the game. However, UVA charged back, cutting a 20-point lead to the game's final nine-point margin in the last 3:22 of the game. However, time ran out as the Terps hung on for the win.
Langhorne finished with game-highs of 19 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. It was the 41st double-double of her career, the most of any active player in the ACC. Coleman tallied 18 points and 12 boards.
For the seventh time this season, five players scored in double figures. Junior Jade Perry came off the bench to contribute 13.
In the Rankings
Maryland is ranked in the top 10 for the 15th-straight week this season, remaining at No. 6 for the second-straight week.
Ten Maryland opponents are ranked or receiving votes in this week's polls. Duke is still No. 1 in both rakings, followed by No. 2 North Carolina, who defeated Florida State on Monday night. George Washington did not move in either poll, garnering a No. 8 ranking by the writers and No. 9 by the coaches. Michigan State is 24th in both polls.
FSU, NC State, Mississippi, TCU and Temple all received votes in one or both polls this week.
The Terps garnered the No. 1 spot in the preseason poll, the first time in the history of the program they opened the season as the top team in the nation.
About Florida State
The Seminoles will face its second-straight top-10 team after dropping an 80-59 decision to No. 2 North Carolina on Monday night. FSU, who is 18-7 on the season, is 9-2 at home, with its only home losses coming to teams ranked in the top three (also lost to No. 1 Duke on Jan. 25).
Florida State is among the top five in the ACC in field goal percentage, shooting 43 percent for the season, but shot below its average (30.4 percent) in the loss to UNC. FSU is also third in the conference in rebounding margin, a category in which the Terrapins lead the nation. The Seminoles are outrebounding opponents by over nine rebounds per game.
FSU is led by Alicia Gladden's 14.2 points per game. She's been even better in conference matchups, netting 15.7 ppg. She is also grabbing 5.9 rebounds per game overall. Brittany Miller is second on the team with 12.0 ppg and is second on the team with 6.1 rpg.
Head coach Sue Semrau is celebrating her 10th season at the FSU helm. She has led the Seminoles to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
SERIES VS. FSU: Maryland leads the all-time series, 20-12. The Terps have won four of the last seven, including las year's victory in College Park, 75-57. The last time the Terrapins traveled to Tallahassee, both Shay Doron and FSU's Roneeka Hodge's scored 39 points each, but the Seminoles claimed the win in overtime, 95-91. The 39 points for Doron tied the school's single-game record.
Winningest Senior Class
With the ends of the careers of seniors Shay Doron and Aurelie Noirez drawing near, the duo, who is head coach Brenda Frese's first recruiting class, are within two victories of their 100th win in their four-year career.
The 2007 senior class is the winningest four-year class in school history, winning 98 games. It also ranks fourth all-time at Maryland in winning percentage at 76.6 percent.
Among this year's senior classes in the ACC, the Terps are third in wins and winning percentage. Only Duke and North Carolina's seniors have won more games and have a better win percentage. However, the Terps' seniors are the only ones in the ACC to have won a national championship.
Doron, Langhorne Earn Academic Honors
For the second-straight year, Maryland's Shay Doron and Crystal Langhorne have earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 honors. Both were selected to the first team and have moved onto the Academic All-America ballot.
Doron was a second team Academic All-American last season. In her final semester at Maryland, it is her third appearance on the all-district team, earning a spot on the second team as a sophomore. She is a Criminology & Criminal Justive major with a 3.67 GPA. Last year, she was named to the Academic All-ACC team.
Langhorne makes the all-district squad for the second year in a row. Last season, she was voted to the second team. Also an Academic All-ACC honoree last season, she is a communications major with a 3.4 GPA.
Coming Up
The Terps are looking to redeem themselves from its 20-point loss to the Blue Devils in Durham, N.C., in January when they host top-ranked Duke on Sunday, Feb. 18. Maryland boasts another sell out for the top-10 clash and will be televised nationally on Fox Sports Net at 6 p.m.
