COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland women's water polo team fell 14-12 in its first Terrapin Invitational game to Indiana. Tied 7-7 at halftime, Indiana pulled away to finish the third quarter up 12-8. A breakaway goal by freshman Shannon Simerly with 1:10 left to play capped off the Terps' fourth-quarter comeback attempt, but Indiana's Brooke Zimmerman scored with 38 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Hoosiers.
Eight scorers contributed to the Terps' offense, led by sophomore Elizabeth Hopkins with three goals. Simerly and sophomore Bryndis Klein each added two, and Laurel Laidlaw, Rachel Jordan, Blaise Stanicic, Jill Lau, and Allie Houseal rounded out the scoring.
Melissa Soria anchored the offense for Indiana, netting five goals in the first three quarters.
Maryland will face No. 16 Michigan at 6:00 p.m. at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium for their second Terrapin Invitational match-up. Michigan defeated No. 17 Princeton 10-8 earlier this morning.
