Maryland Falls to Marist, Bucknell at Terrapin Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland women's water polo team was defeated by MAAC opponent Marist in its final Terrapin Invitational game. The Red Foxes took an early 4-2 first-quarter lead and held off the Terps for a 12-7 victory.
Sophomores Rachel Jordan and Elizabeth Hopkins anchored Maryland's offense with two goals apiece. Freshman Shannon Simerly and sophomores Blaise Stanicic and Laurel Laidlaw netted the remaining three goals for the Terps. Simerly, who joins the Terps this season from the Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami, Fla., has scored in seven of Maryland's first eight games.
Marist's offense was spearheaded by freshman Kristen Barnett with four goals, three of which came in the fourth quarter.
Earlier this morning the Terps fell to division rival Bucknell 7-5. The two teams had even scoring in all but the second quarter, when the Bison outscored the Terps 2-0.
Jordan led Maryland's offense with two goals. Stanicic also contributed a goal, and freshmen Simerly and Sarah Ivry each scored in the fourth quarter.
Next weekend the Terps travel to the Bison's home turf in Lewisburg, Pa. for the Bucknell Invitational.
