COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland women's water polo picked up a pair of wins today at the Bucknell Invitational. The Terrapins avenged their 12-7 loss to Marist at last weekend's Terrapin Invitational with a 7-6 triumph over the Red Foxes. Maryland led 5-3 at halftime, and held onto the lead.
Sophomore Blaise Stanicic led Maryland's offense with three goals. Rachel Jordan added a pair, and Bryndis Klein and Elizabeth Hopkins rounded out the scoring.
On the other end of the pool, head coach Carl Salyer called sophomore Christen Vagts' defensive performance "the best of the game."
Between the pipes, senior goalie Marissa Corwin blocked five while allowing only three goals scored in the first half.
Said Salyer, "We had more energy than when we played them last week, but we still made some young errors. We let them stay close."
The Terps also held out against Wagner, despite the Seahawks' fourth-quarter comeback attempt. Maryland held its largest lead of the game, 10-5, near the end of the third quarter.
"They made a run at us in the fourth quarter," said Salyer. "We were able to hold them off."
Maryland walked away with an 11-9 victory, led by Klein with four goals. Jordan added three, bringing her total to five goals on the day. Vagts netted two, and Stanicic and freshman Shannon Simerly contributed one goal apiece.
Junior goalie Anna Gossett saw playing time in the crucial fourth quarter, blocking three.
Tomorrow morning the Terps will face Villanova for Day 2 of the Bucknell Invitational.
