Terps Travel to BC For Final Regular Season Game
No. 6/5 Maryland closes out the regular-season on Sunday, Feb. 25 traveling to Boston College. The Terps are looking to clinch a No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament which begins next week.
All-American candidate Crystal Langhorne is coming up on a major milestone. She is two rebounds away from 900 in her career. She, along with classmates Jade Perry and Ashleigh Newman, will be playing in their 100th-career game against the Eagles.
The game will be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Network (Comcast SportsNet - Baltimore/Washington area; Fox Sports South, Sun Sports). Charlene Curtis and Mike Hogewood will call the action.
Maryland Moves Up in Coaches Poll
Maryland moved up one spot to No. 5 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll this week and remained at No. 6 in the Associated Press poll. The Terps have been ranked in the top 10 for the 16th-straight week this season.
Ten Maryland opponents are ranked or receiving votes in this week's polls, with three being ranked among the top 10.
Duke is No. 1 in both rakings, followed fourth-ranked North Carolina. George Washington, who the Terrapins defeated by 25 early in the season, remained in the top 10, earning a No. 9 rating in both bolls. Middle Tennessee has been steady at No. 17, while Michigan State jumped up to No. 20 in both polls.
FSU, NC State, Mississippi, TCU and Temple are all receiving votes in one or both polls this week.
The Terps garnered the No. 1 spot in the preseason poll, the first time in the history of the program they opened the season as the top team in the nation.
Terps Break ACC Attendnance Record
The Terps' sold-out game vs. the Tar Heels on Jan. 28 set a new ACC single-game attendance record for a women's basketball game. Fans filled the 17,950-seat arena to support the Terps. Maryland matched that mark in the sell-out against Duke, in its final regular-season home game.
Both sell-outs rank as the fourth and fifth-largest crowds in the nation this season. The Terps boast three of the top 40 attendances in the nation this season.
Maryland boasts the top six crowds ever in ACC women's basketball history (games between conference teams), and eight of the top 10. Five of those crowds have come this season. The 12,295 that attended the Michigan State game would also rank among the top 10 attendances in conference history.
About Boston College
After a loss on Friday night to Virginia Tech, 67-52, the Eagles fall to below .500, going into Sunday's contest at 13-14 overall and 4-10 in the ACC.
In just their second season in the conference, Boston College has split its last four games, also winning three of their last eight. BC is shooting 42.3 percent from the floor, while also limiting its opponents to just 38.4 percent shooting, which ranked fifth in the ACC.
Heading into Friday's contest vs. Virginia Tech, Kathrin Ress has carried the squad offensively, averaging a team-high 16.5 points per game, while also hauling down a team-best 8.6 rebounds per game. She is also the team's best shooter, knocking down just over 51 percent of her shot attempts.
In her 21st season of coaching, BC is mentored by Cathy Ingles, who is in her 14th season in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
SERIES VS. BC: Maryland has never lost to Boston College in the short series between the teams. The Terps won both meetings last year, including BC's ACC's debut. Maryland also won the first meeting between the teams at Comcast Center earlier this season.
Winningest Senior Class
With the ends of the careers of seniors Shay Doron and Aurelie Noirez drawing near, the duo, who is head coach Brenda Frese's first recruiting class, have posted 99 victories in their four-year career, making them the winningest senior class in school history.
The 2007 seniors also rank fourth all-time at Maryland in winning percentage at 76.2 percent. The 1979 seniors hold the school record for four-year winning percentage, winning 80.4 percent of their games (86-21). The 1978 class went 75-20 for a 78.9 win percentage, while the 1980 class posted a 77.0 winning percentage (87-26).
Among this year's senior classes in the ACC, the Terps are third in wins and winning percentage. Only Duke and North Carolina's seniors have won more games and have a better win percentage. However, the Terps' seniors are the only ones in the ACC to have won a national championship.
Toliver Among Top Point Guards
Kristi Toliver is among the 11 candidates for the Nancy Lieberman award, presented to the nation's top point guard. The criterion for the award is the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills the personified the Hall of Famer.
Toliver is the second point guard in the Brenda Frese era to be named a finalist. Former Terrapin Anesia Smith was selected among the top 11 in 2005 after averaging 6.7 assists per game.
Coming Up
With the final regular-season games taking place this weekend, the Terps will wait for the official bracket announcements for the 30th-annual ACC Tournament. The tournament kicks of March 1-4 at Greensboro Coliseum.
