Maryland Hosts Virginia Tech
Bouncing back from a couple of losses, the sixth-ranked Terrapins host Virginia Tech on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. It is the second-to-last home game of the season.
The Hokies have won five of their last six games as they make a charge for a postseason bid. The Terps are looking to start a new win streak after defeating Boston College on Sunday.
The game can be watched and heard on www.ACCselect.com. Video and audio links will be available on the Terps' official web site at www.umterps.com.
Tickets still remain for the game and can be purchased online or by calling the Comcast Center Ticket Office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP. The Terps' final home contest against Duke is sold out.
Game Vs. Duke Sold OUT
The Terps' game vs. Duke on Feb. 18, also the final home game of the season, is SOLD OUT. The sellout will be just the second in Comcast Center for a women's basketball game and the third in school history.
The Terps played in front of a capacity crowd on Jan. 28 against North Carolina, the first-ever sell out of a women's basketball game at Comcast Center. It also set the all-time ACC women's basketball attendance record. The game against the Blue Devils will tie that record.
Last Time Out
Maryland bounced back from two-straight losses and had a dominating performance over Boston College, winning 71-39. It was the fewest points the Terps had allowed in an ACC game since Jan. 28, 1994 and the second-lowest point total the Eagles had ever scored.
Only three Terrapins reached double figures, only the third time this season Maryland has not had four players score at least 10 points. Senior Shay Doron led the way with 15 points, while Laura Harper and Marissa Coleman each had 11.
BC shot just 34.5 percent from the field in the first half. Its shooting woes got even worse in the second half, connecting on less then 15 percent of its attempts. Maryland outrebounded the Eagles, 55-36.
About Virginia Tech
After going 11-8 through the first two and a half month of the season, Virginia Tech has won five of its last six and comes into Thursday's game with a 16-9 record, 5-4 in the ACC. On the road, however, the Hokies are 3-4 so far, last winning away from home on Dec. 21.
Three players average double figures for VT, led by Kirb Copeland's 15.6 points per game. A senior, Copeland was the only starter on last season's team that reached the NCAA Tournament. She is also leads the team with 4.91 assists per game, which ranks fourth in the ACC. The Hokies are one of the top four shooting teams in the ACC, scoring on 43.7 percent of their shot attempts.
Virginia Tech recently almost pulled off a big upset, falling just short of defeating Duke, losing 75-65 at Camerson Indoor Stadium.
SERIES VS. VT: Virginia Tech leads the all-time series, 5-3. The Terps snapped a four-game losing streak to the Hokies last season, topping VT 87-79 in Blacksburg, Va.
Terps' House
Maryland is 13-1 this season in the friendly confines of Comcast Center. The Terps had a 19-game home winning streak, which dated back to their defeat of Florida State on Jan. 16, 2006, snapped by North Carolina on Jan. 28.
Maryland has lost just two home games over the last two seasons, posting a record of 28-2. Last year, the Terps won a school-record 15 home games. They are 59-16 all-time at Comcast Center (since 2002-03).
Hailing Threes
Maryland has had a three-pointer in 77-consecutive games, dating back to Jan. 29, 2005 when the Terps made three treys at Arizona to win in overtime.
Coming Up
Maryland is back on the road to close out the home-and-home with ACC-rival Virginia. The Cavaliers host the Terps at the new John Paul Jones arena on Sunday, Feb. 11. In the last meeting between the teams in Charlottesville, the Terps bid farewell to University Hall, topping the Cavaliers in overtime, their first win there since 1992. Maryland looks to make its first appearance with another win. The game will be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Network, beginning at 12:30 p.m. (Comcast SportsNet in the Baltimore/Washington area).
