COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team will make the short 10 mile trip to Bender Arena in Washington, D.C. on Friday night to take on American at 7:00 p.m. It is the first dual for the Terrapins since they swept a pair of ACC matches on January 27.
The last time the Terps were in action, they beat NC State and Duke on the same day. Against the Wolfpack, sophomore James Knox recorded a pin in overtime in the final match to give Maryland a thrilling 21-18 win. The Terps had been down 18-9 heading into the last three matches. Redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor picked up a decision and senior Jerry Afari upset No. 9 Jainor Palma to set up Knox's heroics.
Later in the day, Maryland went on to beat Duke easily, 27-13. Knox, who was 2-0 on the day, was named the ACC Wrestler of the week. The Terps enter the match against American with a 14-5 overall record.
The Eagles enter the match with a record of 8-8 but have lost their last two matches. Most recently, American lost a close decision to Rutgers, 19-18, a team that Maryland beat 36-4 on December 9.
The Terrapins return to Comcast Pavilion on February 16 and 17 for their final two home duals of the season. Maryland faces off against Virginia on Friday, February 16 on Senior Night and then takes on George Mason the next day on Alumni Day.
