WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Maryland wrestling team held off a tough American squad as the Terrapins defeated the Eagles, 22-15, at Bender Arena on February 9. Junior Charlie Pinto recorded a fall in 6:40 at 141 pounds to help the Terps improve to 15-5 this season.

This is just the third time in the program's history that the Terps have won 15 matches or more. The last time it happened was in 1990 when Maryland set the team record for dual wins in a season with 17. The only other time the Terrapins won at least 15 matches was in 1984.

Despite the close score, the Terps never trailed during the night. Sophomore James Knox got things going for Maryland by winning a tight decision at 125, 4-3. Jordan Lipp tied the match with a decision for the Eagles at 133 but that is the closest American would get to a lead.

Pinto came up with his third pin of the season at 141 pounds when he took care of Kyle Borshoff in 6:40 to give Maryland a 9-3 advantage. After another decision in the favor of American, sophomore Mike McGill pushed the lead to seven points when he won by major decision at 157, 14-4, to give the Terps a 13-6 lead.

American then made its push with a pair of upsets at 165 and 174. Mike Cannon beat senior Jason Kiessling, 8-4, and Rudy Rueda defeated freshman Mike Letts, 9-5, to cut the deficit to one, 13-12 with three matches remaining.

Sophomore Josh Haines promptly responded with a major decision at 184 pounds as he beat Anthony Fuschino 14-1 to make the lead 17-12.

American's Josh Glenn, ranked No. 4 in the country at 197 pounds, made the match exciting heading into the final match of the night as he cut the lead to two, 17-15 with a decision against redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor.

Senior Jerry Afari secured the win for Maryland with a 21-4 technical fall against Evan Murtaugh at heavyweight. It was his first technical fall of the season.

Maryland returns home for its next two duals next weekend. The Terps host ACC foe Virginia on Senior Night which is Friday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m. Maryland will then take on George Mason the following Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Both duals will take place in Comcast Pavilion.
