WASHINGTON, D.C.- The University of Maryland women's water polo team earned a 7-6 win over Collegiate Water Polo Association southern division rival George Washington tonight. Sophomores Rachel Jordan and Blaise Stanicic spearheaded Maryland's offense with two goals apiece, and Elizabeth Hopkins, Christen Vagts, and Shannon Simerly contributed the remaining three.
Senior goalie Marissa Corwin blocked three in two quarters of play on the shallow end of the pool. Sophomore Ashleigh Jobson blocked five in the second and fourth quarters.
"It was a close game with a good crowd," said Maryland head coach Carl Salyer. "It is always tough to go into George Washington and play well, and the girls did a great job."
Tomorrow the Terps leave for Boston to play the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Harvard this weekend. The Terps earned the fourth seed after a stellar 4-0 performance at last weekend's Bucknell Invitational.
Maryland will face Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Marist University in the first round on Saturday morning. Marist fell to the Terps 7-6 last weekend after a 12-5 victory at the Terrapin Invitational.
